Been weighing my precious metal allocation pretty heavily lately, especially as I look at my overall portfolio approaching the $6M mark. I've always been a big believer in physical assets, and gold and silver have been cornerstones of my strategy for going on 15 years now. Based here in Scottsdale, I've had more than a few conversations with fellow entrepreneurs about diversification, and it seems like everyone has their own 'secret sauce' when it comes to PMs.
Currently, my split is roughly 70/30 gold to silver by value, with a significant chunk of that silver being in various fractional coins and some larger bars I picked up years ago. My initial thought when I was first building this stack was simply to accumulate, and silver felt like the more accessible entry point then. Now, with a much larger capital base, I'm genuinely considering whether I should be tilting more towards gold, maybe an 80/20 split, or even pushing it to 85/15. The sheer volume required for silver to move the needle on a $5M+ portfolio is starting to feel a bit cumbersome, even for someone who's not averse to holding physical metal.
My concern with leaning too heavily into silver, despite its industrial demand and potential for larger percentage gains during certain economic cycles, is liquidity on a larger scale. If I ever needed to liquidate a substantial portion of my silver holdings quickly, I wonder if the premiums would hit harder than with gold. Gold just feels easier to move in large amounts, almost universally accepted. Anyone else with a substantial PM portfolio (say, 7-figures+ in metals) wrestling with this specific allocation? Or am I overthinking the 'hassle factor' of silver when the time comes to sell?
