Been seeing a lot of posts lately about gold vs. silver, and it got me thinking about my own journey. Funny enough, I started with silver before I really got serious about gold. Back in the early 2000s, when I was still working those long shifts in the Houston energy sector, I just thought silver coins looked cool. Stacked a fair bit of Eagles and Maples when silver was still dirt cheap – I’m talking $5-8 an ounce for a good chunk of it. My thinking was simple: it’s tangible, it’s a hedge against inflation, and frankly, I just liked the shine of it. It’s definitely a smaller portion of my overall precious metals holdings now, but it still feels good knowing I have it.
My strategy has always been to treat silver as my "smaller" insurance policy, whereas gold is my bedrock. I still pick up a tube or two every now and then, especially when there's a dip. For me, it's about physical possession. I've got most of it tucked away securely, and some of it is in my Gold IRA as well – gotta diversify within the precious metals, right? It's been interesting watching the gold/silver ratio fluctuate over the years. Anyone else feel like silver has been lagging a bit compared to gold lately, or am I just seeing things through my gold-tinted spectacles?
Now that I'm retired, the focus has definitely shifted more towards wealth preservation and planning for my Required Minimum Distributions. It's a whole new ballgame when you're not actively earning. I’ve been using that RMD Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint to get a clearer picture of what I'll be facing. It’s a handy tool, especially with a diversified portfolio. How do you all factor your silver holdings into your overall retirement planning, particularly with RMDs? Do you consider it a more volatile asset that you'd liquidate sooner, or are you holding for the long haul like me?
