I'm in a bit of a pickle and hoping some of you seasoned precious metals investors can chime in. I've been helping clients set up their Gold IRAs here in Salt Lake City for a few years now, and the question of American Silver Eagles vs. generic silver rounds always comes up. For my own Gold IRA, which is sitting comfortably around the $380k mark, I've primarily focused on gold for the bulk of it. However, I’m looking to diversify a small portion into silver now. Initially, I thought Silver Eagles were a no-brainer for their recognized purity and legal tender status, even with the higher premium.
The thing is, those premiums on Eagles have been really eating at me lately. When I'm advising clients, especially those just starting out or with smaller portfolios, the idea of getting more physical silver for their dollar with generic rounds is appealing. They still meet the IRA fineness requirements, so theoretically, it's just about the total silver content. But then there’s the ‘sellability’ factor. Are generics really as liquid as Eagles when it comes time to distribute or take a gain? I've heard arguments both ways – some say a troy ounce is a troy ounce, others swear by the Eagles' easier resale.
I’m trying to make the best decision for my own portfolio, which is supposed to be my model for my clients. My gut is telling me to stick with Eagles for the peace of mind, but my head is doing the math on those premiums and thinking of all the extra ounces I could grab with generics. It just feels like I'm leaving money on the table. Has anyone here had experience selling a significant amount of generic silver out of an IRA? Was it a smooth process? Also, for those of you who’ve gone for a Gold IRA, have you used that Eligibility Checker tool before deciding? It's something I recommend to my clients to quickly see if they qualify, but I haven't actually run my own info through it in a while.
