Alright, so I’ve been kicking around the idea of rolling over some of my old 401k into a Precious Metals IRA, specifically for silver coins. I’ve held a decent amount of physical silver for years outside of any tax-advantaged accounts – talking about a couple hundred grand in Eagles and Maples, mostly as a hedge against the kind of volatility we’ve seen. Now, with the real estate market in Aspen cooling a touch and some of my larger development projects tied up, I'm thinking about strategically moving some paper assets into something more tangible within a retirement account.
My main question revolves around the tax implications during a future distribution. With a traditional rollover, obviously, ordinary income tax on distributions. But for those of you who have actively held silver coins within a Gold IRA, are there any nuances I should be aware of regarding capital gains taxes on the value appreciation of the silver itself? I know it’s still an IRA distribution, but thinking of my current physical holdings, if I sell those individually, it’s capital gains. Does the IRA wrapper completely negate that distinction, making it all ordinary income?
I was looking at this Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool the other day, mostly out of curiosity given my heavy metal holdings already. It really highlighted the long-term stability gold has offered compared to stock market swings, even with my diversified portfolio. Silver often tracks gold, albeit with its own unique volatility. I’m really leaning towards filling up the silver end of a new IRA to further diversify and protect against inflation. Anyone have direct experience with distributions of silver coins from a PM IRA? Appreciate any insights, want to make sure I'm thinking through all angles here.
