Been thinking a lot lately about how to pass on some of this wealth, specifically the physical stuff, to my kids and grandkids. We're talking beyond the usual brokerage accounts and real estate holdings. I’ve built a pretty substantial metals portfolio over the last 15 years – probably pushing $5M just in gold and a good chunk in silver too. The goal has always been long-term preservation, and honestly, a bit of a middle finger to fiat currency. My kids are in their late 20s and early 30s, and while they understand the concept, they're not exactly stacking Eagles in a home safe yet.
My wife and I are based out of Scottsdale, and we've done a decent job educating them on financial literacy, but the nuances of precious metals as a legacy asset rather than just an investment are different. It’s not just about the value, it’s about having a tangible, unconfiscatable asset outside the system. I’m leaning towards setting up individual vaults for them at a private depository, maybe funded with a portion of my current holdings. The question is, how much? And should I gift it now with some strings attached, or bake it into the estate plan more formally?
I’ve considered putting some silver coins into their hands now, just to get them accustomed to holding the physical metal. There's something different about seeing and feeling a stack of 10oz bars versus a number on a screen. For their IRAs, I’ve already steered them towards self-directed options, which is where the Gold IRA component comes in. If anyone here has experience with legacy planning specifically using gold IRAs or even just gifting large amounts of physical gold, I’d love to hear your approach. What pitfalls did you encounter? What worked well?
Also, sidebar - for anyone just starting to explore this, or wanting to get a handle on the various types of gold IRAs, I found the Gold IRA Quiz over at Gold IRA Blueprint to be surprisingly helpful. It's a solid tool for figuring out what fits your situation best without getting overwhelmed. Anyway, looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on preserving wealth through metal for the next generation.
