Okay, so I've been seriously looking into diversifying my retirement savings beyond just my 401k and some ETFs. I'm in my late 20s, living in Charleston, and trying to get ahead of the game with retirement planning. I've got about $30k in my current portfolio, and a Gold IRA is looking pretty appealing as a hedge against inflation and market volatility for a portion of that.
My biggest hang-up right now is the storage situation. I understand the two main options are an approved depository or a home storage IRA. Honestly, the idea of having a few gold coins or bars in a super secure safe here at home is really appealing. It feels more tangible, and I like having direct access. But then there's the whole "self-dealing" IRS rules and making sure everything is 100% legit. Has anyone actually gone the home storage route for their IRA gold? What are the biggest hurdles or unexpected complexities?
Conversely, using an approved depository seems like the safer bet from a compliance perspective, but then it's out of sight, out of mind, and there are storage fees. I'm trying to weigh the peace of mind of a depository against the perceived control and accessibility of home storage, especially since I'm not looking at a massive allocation to gold – maybe $5k-$10k to start. Are the depository fees usually a significant drag on returns for smaller accounts?
Also, completely unrelated but something I just thought of – for those of you with significant gold in your IRAs, how do you even begin to think about RMDs eventually? I stumbled across this RMD Calculator (https://rmdcalculator.goldirablueprint.com/) and it got me wondering if converting gold back into cash for distributions is a painful process down the line. Any insights or war stories would be super helpful!
