I initiated a direct rollover of about $300k from my old 401k into a new Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals about three weeks ago. I went with Augusta after doing a ton of research, largely based on their reputation for transparency and excellent customer service. So far, that's definitely been my experience with their team walking me through the paperwork. I specifically allocated about 60% to gold American Eagles and 40% to various silver coins – mostly Canadian Maples and some pre-1965 U.S. junk silver, which I'm pretty excited about from a diversification standpoint.
They told me to expect the whole process to take 3-4 weeks, but I’m hitting the three-week mark Thursday and still no confirmation that the funds have even left the 401k administrator. Has anyone else experienced similar timelines, especially with direct rollovers? I know these things can take time, particularly with legacy institutions, but a little communication from the 401k side would go a long way in managing my anxiety. I've called them twice and just get the standard "it's processing" line.
My primary goal here is wealth preservation, especially with the current economic uncertainty. As a lawyer in Philly, I see a lot of clients concerned about inflation and market volatility, and frankly, I share those concerns. This move is a significant part of my long-term strategy to protect my principal, and every day that passes without confirmation feels like an eternity. I’m just eager to see those metals in the vault.
Any insights or shared experiences on average wait times for direct rollovers would be greatly appreciated. Did anyone have a much longer wait? Was there anything you did to speed it up, or should I just resign myself to playing the waiting game?
