Just went through the 401k to Gold IRA rollover myself, and wanted to share my timeline for anyone else looking into it. Seems like a lot of folks are curious about how long this actually takes, and it was definitely a bit of a nail-biter for me. My old 401k was with a pretty standard provider, and I’m parked about $150k of it over into a new Gold IRA. Been in the casino industry out here in Vegas for decades, so I get risk, but watching those numbers fluctuate as it moved was still a trip.
Here’s how it broke down: Initial contact with the Gold IRA company was about 3 weeks ago. Got all the paperwork signed and sent back within 2 days. Then came the waiting game. My old 401k provider took about a week to actually process the distribution request, which felt like an eternity. After that, it was another 5 business days for the funds to actually hit the Gold IRA custodian's account. All in all, from my first call to seeing the funds settled and confirmed, we're looking at almost exactly 3 weeks. They said it could be quicker, but honestly, having worked with so many different systems over the years, I was braced for longer.
My main concern throughout was the market volatility. Even though gold is supposed to be a hedge, you never know what's going to happen in a 3-week window. Luckily, it all worked out fine this time. What were your timelines like? Did anyone have a significantly faster or slower experience? And for those who did a direct rollover, did you feel like you had good visibility into where your money was at each step of the process? I felt a little in the dark at times, even with daily check-ins.
