Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over some of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’m a government employee here in Albuquerque, and while the pension is nice, I’ve been looking for ways to really supplement it, especially with all the talk about inflation lately. My 401k was sitting pretty heavily in stocks and some mutual funds, and honestly, the volatility was starting to make me a little queasy. I'm not looking to get rich quick, just protect what I've got and have some stability.
I ended up moving about $60,000 of it into physical gold. The whole process was surprisingly smoother than I thought it would be. I’d done a fair bit of research beforehand, mostly on sites like the Learning Center (shoutout to Gold IRA Blueprint's Learning Center, that place has some solid info). I was a bit worried about all the paperwork and potential tax implications, but the company I went with walked me through it step by step. They even handled the direct transfer, so I never actually touched the funds myself, which apparently is key for avoiding tax penalties.
It’s only been about six months, but I already feel a lot more secure. Seeing that physical asset, even if it's just a warehouse receipt, just feels different than watching numbers fluctuate on a screen. My main goal is long-term wealth preservation, not necessarily huge gains, and gold seems to fit that bill perfectly. Anyone else here in a similar boat, especially government folks looking to diversify their retirement funds?
Thinking about potentially moving another chunk next year if things continue to trend this way. What are others' thoughts on the ideal percentage of a retirement portfolio to allocate to precious metals? I'm sitting around 15% right now with the gold and considering bumping that up a bit.
