Rolled over my 401k to a Gold IRA – and why you should too (especially with the market right now)

Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been debating this for a while, ever since I left my banking manager gig a couple of years back. Watching the market these past few months, especially with all the inflation talk and crazy swings, just cemented my decision. I had about $300k sitting in a pretty standard S&P 500 fund, and honestly, the anxiety was starting to get to me.
The process itself wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be. I went with a firm here in Portland that specializes in precious metal IRAs – did a lot of due diligence, obviously. My biggest concern was making sure it was a direct rollover to avoid any tax implications, and they handled all the communication with my old custodian beautifully. It felt good to diversify beyond just paper assets. I’m not saying ditch everything, but having physical gold (in my case, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples) stored securely is a HUGE peace of mind for me right now. I ended up converting about 35% of that 401k, so a little over $100k, into gold. The rest is still in more traditional investments, but with a more conservative allocation.
I know some folks are skeptical about gold, but for me, it's about wealth preservation and acting as a hedge against volatility, especially with all the quantitative easing still happening. As someone who's seen the inside of the financial system, I lean towards tangible assets. Anyone else in a similar boat, or thinking about making a move like this? What were your biggest concerns, and how did you address them?
Oh, and on a related note, if you’re even remotely considering your retirement strategy with gold in mind, seriously check out the Retirement Planner link. It’s a super useful tool for modeling different scenarios and understanding the potential impact of precious metals on your overall retirement nest egg. It really helped me visualize some of the long-term benefits before I made the leap.
