Thought I'd share my experience with rolling over some of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about this for a while now, especially with all the talk about inflation and the economy feeling a bit wobbly. Work in dairy, so I'm used to things being pretty unpredictable, but the stock market's been making me more nervous than a sick heifer lately.
Had about $750k in my old 401k from my last company. Decided to move about $200k of that into a Gold IRA. Process wasn’t as complex as I thought, honestly. Called up a few companies, got some quotes, and settled on one that seemed to know their stuff. The paperwork was a bit of a haul, as expected, but nothing truly insane. The actual transfer of funds took about three weeks, which felt like an eternity when I was checking every day, but it went through without a hitch. Ended up buying a mix of gold coins and some smaller bars. It's sitting in a depository now, feels good to know it's there. Like having some hay in the barn for winter, you know?
My biggest motivation was just diversification. I'm 58, live just outside Madison, and starting to really think about retirement more seriously. My financial advisor back in Milwaukee was a bit iffy on it, kept pushing me to stay 100% in stocks and bonds. But I’ve seen enough cycles to know that putting all your eggs in one basket, especially someone else's basket, isn't always the smartest play. Been looking at tools like that Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool and just seeing how gold has held its own, sometimes even outperformed, when things get shaky. It’s not about getting rich quick for me, it's about preserving what I've worked for.
Anyone else here done a similar rollover recently? How are you feeling about your decision? Sometimes I still second-guess myself, but then I look at the news and feel a bit more secure. What concerns did you have that pushed you in this direction?
