Just wrapped up rolling over an old 401k from a previous job into a Gold IRA, and wanted to share my experience. I've been a bit nervous about the market lately, especially seeing some of these real estate fluctuations even here in Miami, and decided putting some of my retirement eggs into something more tangible like physical gold through precious metals IRAs felt like a smart move. My portfolio is sitting between 150-200k right now, and I’m really focused on building that nest egg for when I eventually step back from showing houses.
The process itself was smoother than I anticipated, to be honest. I worked with a company that specialized in precious metals IRAs, and they really walked me through everything. The paperwork was a bit much, but they handled most of the heavy lifting. The biggest thing was understanding the direct rollover vs. indirect rollover implications – definitely something to research if you're considering it. I went with a direct rollover to avoid any tax headaches or penalties, which was a huge relief. Seriously, the last thing I need is another tax form to worry about during closing season.
It took about three weeks from start to finish. Most of that time was just waiting for the funds to transfer between custodians. Once the money was in the new account, I got to choose the specific gold coins and bars that would be held in the vault. That was surprisingly fun, actually – felt like I was actually buying something secure. I chose a mix of American Gold Eagles and some PAMP Suisse bars. They're stored in a Delaware depository, which felt like a good, solid option for security and diversification away from Florida's hurricane path, haha.
Anyone else in South Florida gone through this recently? What precious metals did you choose for your IRA? Or if you’re thinking about it, what are your biggest concerns? I’m happy to share more details about the company I used if anyone wants a recommendation. Just trying to diversify my assets and protect my future!
