Rolled my old 401k into a Gold IRA - feeling good (mostly!)

Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over an old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’m a government employee here in Albuquerque, been contributing to my pension for years, but always felt like I needed another leg to stand on for retirement. You know, diversify beyond just the pension and some stock market exposure. I had about 75k sitting in an old employer's 401k that was just… languishing. Didn't really feel like it was growing much, and the fees felt a bit opaque.
The whole process was actually smoother than I expected. I did a direct rollover, so the money never touched my personal bank account, which apparently simplifies things tax-wise. The Gold IRA company handled a lot of the paperwork directly with my old 401k administrator. It took about three weeks from start to finish for the funds to clear and the physical gold to be purchased and stored. I went with mostly gold coins, a small portion in some silver too, just for good measure.
My biggest hesitation was honestly the lack of "growth" compared to potential stock market gains, but seeing the current economic climate, the stability feels really good. It's helping me sleep better at night knowing a chunk of my retirement isn't directly tied to the whims of the stock market. I’ve been looking into tools like the "Silver vs Stocks" comparison on Gold IRA Blueprint (specifically the 10-year view here) and it really solidified my decision that having some precious metals in the mix is just smart right now. While stocks have clearly outperformed silver over the last decade, having that counterbalance feels crucial for my overall portfolio strategy.
Anyone else in a similar boat, perhaps an older 401k or even a traditional IRA they've rolled over into precious metals? How are you feeling about your decision now, particularly with inflation ticking up? Any surprises or things you wish you'd known going into it?
