Finally pulled the trigger and got a chunk of my 401k rolled over into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the market feeling a bit… frothy. My grandparents always swore by gold, and honestly, with what I've seen in the timber game, hard assets just make more sense sometimes than numbers on a screen.
I ended up moving about $350k out of my old 401k. It was a bit of a process, mostly just paperwork and waiting, but the company I used (did a lot of research, went with a bigger firm based out of Texas, but they have a team covering my area) made it pretty smooth. I was a little nervous about the fees, but after looking at my projection for the next 10-15 years, it felt well worth it for the peace of mind. The idea of having part of my retirement nest egg literally locked away feels pretty damn good, especially given the history of my family’s wealth and the focus on generational stability.
Living out here in Spokane, you definitely feel a connection to tangible assets. It's not like the Bay Area where everything is tech and virtual. Here, you see the lumber mills, the agriculture – people understand tangible value. I know some folks just stack silver coins in their safe, and I’ve got a small collection myself, but for the larger play with retirement, the Gold IRA felt like the right move. I'm not looking for a quick buck, just preserving what my family has worked for over the decades.
Curious to hear if anyone else has made a similar move? Any regrets or things you wish you knew beforehand? And for those of you who are more into the physical side, what's your take on holding more silver vs. going for the bigger gold plays?
