Rolled a huge 401k into gold – best decision of my life, but NOT without headaches

Just wanted to share my recent experience with a 401k to Gold IRA rollover. I’ve been sitting on a pretty substantial 401k from my previous company (think north of $2M) and watching the market volatility these past few years, especially with all the Fed action, had me seriously spooked. I've been stacking physical for years, got a decent chunk of silver and gold in my safe, but that 401k felt exposed.
Finally pulled the trigger a few months ago after literally years of on-and-off research. The process itself wasn't super complicated, but it definitely wasn't seamless. My old 401k administrator was a nightmare to deal with. They kept dragging their feet on the transfer paperwork, “lost” documents, and I swear they wanted me to just give up. Took about a month longer than the precious metals IRA company initially quoted, which was annoying, but I just kept on them. Ended up going with a mix of American Gold Eagles, a few Canadian Maples, and some PAMP Suisse bars for the bulk of it. Held my breath through the transfer of funds, but seeing that allocation hit my new account was a huge relief.
Emotionally, it’s a game-changer. Knowing a significant portion of my retirement isn't tied directly to the whims of the stock market or some political shenanigans just feels... right. I'm an entrepreneur here in Scottsdale, and I constantly preach diversification, but seeing it manifest this way in my own portfolio is incredibly reassuring. Yeah, there are storage fees, and the bid-ask spread isn't ideal, but for that kind of capital, the peace of mind is priceless for me. Plus, who knows what ridiculousness is coming down the pike economically?
Anyone else go through a similar large-scale rollover recently? What were your biggest pain points or pleasant surprises? Always curious to hear other perspectives, especially from those of us holding substantial PM positions.
