Okay, so I've been in the casino industry here in Vegas for what feels like forever, seen more ups and downs than a slot machine jackpot. Always been good at risk management on the tables, but my own retirement portfolio? Not always so much. For years, it was just the standard 401k, mostly equities, and while it grew, the volatility always just sat wrong with me, especially after a few market dips that gave me serious heartburn.
I started looking into alternatives pretty seriously about 18 months ago. Had about $200k in my old 401k from a previous gig, just sitting there. I reached out to a few different gold IRA companies, did a bunch of due diligence, probably like 10+ hours on calls and research. Ended up rolling over about $75k into a self-directed Gold IRA. It wasn't a hard decision to pull that much out of equities given how much inflation we’ve been seeing lately and the general state of the world. It felt like a smart bet to hedge against further instability.
The process itself was smoother than I expected, honestly. Most of the paperwork and transfers were handled between the custodian and the gold firm. I chose to go with physical gold bullion—mostly American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs—stored in a depository outside of Nevada. The whole thing took about three weeks from first signature to confirmation of purchase and storage. It definitely gives me a different kind of peace of mind knowing a portion of my retirement isn't tied directly to the stock market's whims.
Anyone else here go this route? How much of your overall portfolio did you diversify into precious metals? I'm curious if I went too light or if this is a decent starting point. Any insights on managing this going forward would be appreciated too!
