Hey everyone, Margaret here! I'm a bit of a newbie still when it comes to the nitty-gritty of Gold IRAs, having just started diversifying my portfolio from tech stocks into precious metals a few months back. I was a tech exec in San Francisco for years, so this is a whole new world for me, and I'm loving the stability it seems to offer compared to the rollercoaster of the market!
I'm looking for some insights into storage fees. When I set up my Gold IRA with XYZ Custodian, I opted for segregated storage, which felt right given the sizable chunk of my retirement I'm moving into gold (around $400,000 so far). My fee structure is a flat $250 annually for segregated storage, plus a small percentage (0.08%) on the total value exceeding a certain threshold. For my current holdings, that adds up to about $570 a year. It feels... okay? Not exorbitant, but I’m wondering if I could be doing better. I've heard some people talk about scaled fees or different structures with other custodians. What are your experiences like? Are flat fees generally better for larger portfolios, or does it depend on the percentage structure?
I also used a Retirement Planner (this one: https://retire.goldirablueprint.com/?forum) extensively when I was figuring out how much of my retirement to allocate to gold, and it was super helpful in visualizing the long-term impact on my overall financial picture. Highly recommend it if you’re still in the planning stages! But even with all my research, the storage fee aspect still feels a bit nebulous.
So, what's your take? Are there any hidden fees I should be aware of? And for those with significant gold holdings, what kind of storage fees are you seeing? Any tips on negotiating these fees, or is it pretty much take-it-or-leave-it with most custodians? Any advice from you seasoned investors would be greatly appreciated!
