Platinum vs. Gold - Anyone jumping on Platinum?

    Key Takeaways
    • Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about platinum and whether it's truly undervalued right now.
    • I've been in gold for a while now, sitting on about $75k in my Gold IRA spread across coins and bars (physical in a vault, of course, no paper here).
    • My gold holdings have done right by me, especially looking back at the last 10 years compared to the stock market.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about platinum and whether it's truly undervalued right now. I've been in gold for a while now, sitting on about $75k in my Gold IRA spread across coins and bars (physical in a vault, of course, no paper here). As an ag businessman out here in Fresno, I’ve always been about real assets that you can touch and feel, unlike all those digital currencies or company stocks that can go belly up overnight.

My gold holdings have done right by me, especially looking back at the last 10 years compared to the stock market. I actually used that Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool a while back and it really opened my eyes. Gold's consistency is why I'm confident in it, but platinum's current price dip has me wondering if it's a good diversification play. I know it has industrial uses, especially with the push for greener tech, but it’s also a precious metal in its own right.

The thought of diversifying from just gold and a bit of silver appeals to me, especially if platinum has a good chance of appreciating significantly. I'm not looking to dump my gold by any means, that's my bedrock. But maybe allocating a smaller portion, say $10k or $15k, to platinum could be smart. I’m thinking about some platinum American Eagles or even some bars.

Are any of you experienced PM investors getting into platinum right now? What are your thoughts on its long-term prospects, especially compared to gold? Any specific refiners or dealers you'd recommend looking at for platinum? Trying to figure out if this is just FOMO talking or a genuine opportunity.

Totally get the platinum curiosity! I actually dipped my toes in a few years back when it was looking super cheap compared to gold. Had a small amount in a regular brokerage account, mostly just out of interest. Got out of it before heading into a Gold IRA, but it was an interesting ride. Definitely see the appeal of diversifying within precious metals, especially with the talk about it being undervalued.

Interesting, I've definitely heard some of that chatter too. You mentioned you're holding physical in a vault, which is smart. But are you storing that with a third-party custodian, or is it a personal vault you have access to?

Interesting thought about platinum. While it definitely has its industrial uses and a certain appeal, I'm still firmly in the gold camp for my IRA. My main concern with platinum is its volatility and the fact that its demand is much more tied to industrial performance than gold's. Gold seems to hold its value more consistently as a safe haven, especially in uncertain times. Not saying platinum is a bad investment overall, but for a retirement account, I lean towards stability.
