Okay, so I've been doing a ton of research lately into diversifying my retirement with precious metals, specifically platinum. I'm a doctor here in Boston, and while I have a pretty healthy portfolio – somewhere in the neighborhood of $750k – I wouldn't call myself a whale. My gold holdings are already pretty solid and I'm looking to get into platinum, but it seems like most of the resources out there are geared towards folks dropping seven figures, or conversely, tiny amounts that barely cover the fees. It's a bit frustrating trying to find a good fit for someone in my position. Has anyone else found themselves in this weird middle ground?
I’m looking to allocate around $50k-$75k into platinum. I’ve called a few of the big names – Augusta, Birch Gold, Regal – and honestly, some of the sales pitches felt a little… intense? Like they really want me to liquidate everything and go all-in, which just isn't my strategy. I'm trying to be strategic and integrate this as a hedge, not make a speculative gamble. I've also checked out some local financial advisors, but many of them seem to push paper assets exclusively, or have very limited experience with physical platinum in an IRA. It feels like a niche within a niche.
My main concerns are finding a company with transparent fees (setup, storage, and annual maintenance), a good selection of IRA-approved platinum coins/bars, and excellent customer service that isn't just focused on hard selling. I also want to make sure their custodians are reputable. It's not a huge portion of my total portfolio, but it's still a significant amount of money to me, and I want to feel confident in my choices. For other "smaller" (by industry standards, at least) investors out there, what companies did you end up going with for platinum? Any hidden gems or serious red flags I should be aware of?
