I’ve been eyeing up adding some platinum to my metals portfolio, specifically in an IRA. Currently, my gold IRA is with Augusta Precious Metals and they’ve been solid for years regarding gold, but I'm looking at my options for platinum and wanted to hear from this community.

My metals portfolio is pretty heavy on the gold side right now, probably 80% gold, 10% silver, and the last 10% is some assorted numismatic coins I picked up over the decades. I retired from ExxonMobil almost five years ago, and with the portfolio hitting around the $3.2M mark recently, I’m thinking it's time to diversify a little more into platinum. I'm based here in Houston, and while Augusta has been great for gold, I'm not sure if they're the best for platinum from a cost or storage perspective compared to some other dedicated providers. Anyone here have experience specifically setting up a Platinum IRA with other custodians?

I’m particularly interested in hearing about fees – setup, annual maintenance, storage. With my gold, I’m used to a certain structure, but I know platinum can sometimes have different storage requirements or markups. Also, any red flags to watch out for? Hidden fees, pushy sales tactics, or custodians that are difficult to work with if you ever need to take a distribution? I remember getting strong-armed years ago by a financial advisor about some high-fee mutual funds, and I’m pretty sensitive to that kind of BS now. What’s been your experience?

Custodians are a huge one for platinum, good call bringing it up. I actually just reviewed my holdings last month – about 30% of my total portfolio is in precious metals, with a nice chunk of that in platinum. I'm over in SLC, and finding reliable local storage for platinum isn't quite as straightforward as gold. I used the IRA Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint to map out some future allocations and potential growth, and it really highlighted the importance of picking a custodian with a solid track record for diverse precious metals, not just gold. Ended up sticking with my current one for now, but that tool was genuinely helpful for seeing the long-term picture and what different custodians would mean for those projections.

Hey, I hear you on this! Had a similar situation a few years back. My gold IRA was with Regal Assets and they were great for gold, but when I wanted to add some palladium, they didn't really have the best options or pricing. Ended up going with another company entirely for the palladium portion of my IRA. It's definitely worth shopping around if your current provider doesn't specialize in platinum.

Hey, interesting post! Out of curiosity, what makes you want to add platinum specifically? Is it just for diversification, or are you seeing something in the platinum market that's really catching your eye?

Hey, I hear you on wanting to diversify with platinum, but have you looked into the historical performance compared to gold and silver? Sometimes platinum's price movements can be a bit more volatile and less consistently correlated with inflation or economic uncertainty than the other two. It might be worth a deeper dive into its long-term track record before committing a significant portion of your IRA. Just something to consider!

Hey, that's a smart move looking into platinum! While Augusta is great for gold, not all custodians handle platinum IRAs, or at least not with the same ease. I'd definitely double-check their specific policies and any potential extra fees for platinum storage.

Also, a quick tip: make sure any platinum you're considering is IRA-approved. It needs to be 99.95% pure and meet specific fineness standards. A good resource to cross-reference eligible products is the IRS's own guidelines or a reputable dealer's list of IRA-approved metals.

Look, I get the appeal of platinum, but for me, nothing beats the stability of gold in my IRA. I started my Gold IRA after seeing the housing market here in Vegas go absolutely bonkers a few years back – it was a wake-up call to diversify beyond just real estate and stocks. The Tax Calculator at https://tax.goldirablueprint.com/?forum showed me exactly how much I could save on taxes by rolling over an old 401k, which was the final push I needed. My custodian for gold has been fantastic, no complaints at all with their storage and transparency reports.

Honestly, platinum is an interesting idea, but when the market started getting really squirrelly back in 2008, I moved a significant chunk of my portfolio – we're talking about a seven-figure sum at the time – into gold. I remember sitting in my office in Aspen, watching the screens, feeling that knot in my stomach tighten with every headline. It wasn't just about preserving wealth; it was about having something tangible, something that felt real when everything else felt like it was dissolving. The Learning Center at https://learn.goldirablueprint.com/?forum has great guides if you're just starting out, and it really helped me understand the nuances of custodians and storage for *physical* assets. That peace of mind? Priceless.

Been in the precious metals game for over 20 years now, and while my primary focus has always been on gold and silver in my IRA, I dipped my toes into platinum back in '08 when prices were looking attractive. For custodians, I used Equity Trust Company for that particular move – they were solid, no-frills, and handled the metals transfer seamlessly from my dealer. Just make sure you understand the spread differences for platinum compared to gold; it's a different beast in terms of liquidity for smaller amounts.

I'm in Seattle too, and while I haven't gone the platinum route for my IRA, I did dive deep into Gold IRAs a few years back. The whole process of finding a custodian felt like navigating a minefield, especially with the high-pressure sales tactics some companies used. I remember one outfit constantly pushing me to "act now before the next market crash" – it was exhausting trying to get clear information without the fear-mongering. Ended up with Augusta Precious Metals for my $75k Gold IRA and have been pretty happy with their transparent fee structure and zero sales pressure.

Honestly, I looked at platinum and other metals for my IRA when I was first setting things up a few years back, but I landed firmly on gold. My financial advisor here in SF, who’s been through a few cycles with me, really pushed for the liquidity and historical stability of gold. We decided to roll about $300k of my old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals back in 2021, and so far, I haven't regretted that decision one bit. They've been incredibly transparent and the storage solution they offered was exactly what I needed for peace of mind.

Honestly, I've always stuck to gold for my precious metal IRA, so I can't give you direct platinum custodian recs. But on the broader topic of precious metals in your retirement, what really opened my eyes initially, even before I rolled over my old 401k, was looking at the long-term performance. The Gold vs Stocks 10-year comparison from Gold IRA Blueprint really puts things in perspective when you're thinking about asset allocation and hedging against market volatility. It was a game-changer for my strategy here in Virginia Beach.
