Okay, so I'm a bit torn here on my Platinum IRA and wanted to get some other perspectives. I put about $75k into it last year, mostly Canadian Platinum Maple Leafs – solid, reliable bullion, you know the drill. Being a jewelry store owner here in Providence, I know my metals pretty well, and platinum's been a personal favorite for a while. The appreciation has been nice, a decent hedge against all the inflation talk. But now I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing out on some potential upside by sticking purely to bullion.
I've been looking at some numismatic platinum coins, things like American Platinum Eagles with specific dates or proofs. The premiums are, of course, a lot higher than your standard bullion. My concern is, for an IRA, is that extra premium justifiable for the potential collector value down the road? Or am I just adding unnecessary risk and expense for something that might not liquidate as easily or effectively when it comes time for distributions?
I'm planning on holding this for the long term, probably another 10-15 years until I hit RMD age. Speaking of which, I was playing around with that RMD Calculator I found on Gold IRA Blueprint and it really put things into perspective about needing good liquidity then. I guess I'm trying to balance that "set it and forget it" bullion mentality with the thrill of potentially higher returns from something rarer. Has anyone here gone the numismatic route for their platinum IRA? Any regrets or big wins?
What are your thoughts on diversification within a platinum IRA – is it worth dipping into numismatics for a portion of the portfolio, or is pure bullion the smarter, more conservative play for long-term growth and eventual distribution? I'm leaning heavily towards staying bullion, but the collector in me is whispering... so I'd love to hear some feedback.
