Okay, so I'm trying to wrap my head around this Platinum IRA thing, specifically the coin choice. I've got about $60-70k I'm looking to roll over from an old 401k to supplement my government pension down the road. I'm based here in Albuquerque and just trying to make smart moves for retirement.

My dealer was pushing American Eagles pretty hard – 1oz Platinum Eagles, of course. Says they're super recognizable, good liquidity, etc. All the usual stuff. But then I started looking at the Canadian Platinum Maple Leafs and even the Australian Platinum Koalas, and honestly, the premiums seem a bit better on some of those. Not huge, but when you're talking about a significant chunk of change, every little bit adds up, right?

I know the Eagles are "American," and part of me likes supporting that, but on the other hand, a buck is a buck. Is there a REAL difference in terms of long-term value or ease of selling between the Platinum Eagles and, say, a Platinum Maple Leaf once it's time to cash out? I’m talking 15-20 years from now. I'm not looking to actively trade this stuff, just a solid hedge against inflation and a good store of value. Any other government employees out there who've gone through this? What did you pick and why?

Totally get where you're coming from! I had a super similar scenario a few years back, just with a bit less to roll over. Ended up going with the Buffalos after talking to a few different places. The premium on Platinum Eagles was just a little too much for me, even though they look awesome. How long have you been looking into this, if you don't mind me asking?

Interesting comparison! I've been looking at similar options for my own IRA. When you say "Platinum Eagles," are you talking about the American Platinum Eagle proof coins or the bullion versions?

Hey, I hear you on the coin choice dilemma. While Platinum Eagles are definitely cool and have that government-backed purity, for a Gold IRA, have you considered just... gold?

I know the name is "Gold IRA," but sometimes people get a little too caught up in the novelty of platinum. Gold is historically the bedrock here, and its market is arguably more liquid and understood by a wider range of investors. Just a thought to chew on if you're looking for an alternative perspective!

Hey there! Sounds like you're doing your due diligence, which is smart. When comparing Platinum Eagles and Buffalos for an IRA, definitely remember to check the premium over spot price. Sometimes one coin can have a significantly higher premium due to demand or mintage, which could eat into your potential returns over time.
