Palladium IRA transfer from 401k - timeline shocker?

    Key Takeaways
    • I just initiated a rollover of a chunk of my old 401k into a new Palladium IRA, specifically for some PAMP Suisse bars I've been eyeing.
    • My current portfolio is mostly equities, with about 10% in alternative assets, so this felt like a natural diversification play.
    • Based out of Greenwich, and you see a lot of folks talking about gold here, but I really like palladium's industrial demand story.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I just initiated a rollover of a chunk of my old 401k into a new Palladium IRA, specifically for some PAMP Suisse bars I've been eyeing. Had about $750k sitting in a legacy fund from a previous gig that I wasn't actively managing, and given the market volatility lately, the appeal of physical palladium in an IRA was just too strong to ignore. My current portfolio is mostly equities, with about 10% in alternative assets, so this felt like a natural diversification play. Based out of Greenwich, and you see a lot of folks talking about gold here, but I really like palladium's industrial demand story.

Here's my question for the forum: what kind of timelines have you guys actually experienced for 401k to Gold/Palladium IRA transfers? My custodian, who usually handles my more complex hedge fund structures, quoted me something like 3-4 weeks for the entire process, from initial paperwork to the physical metal being secured in the vault. That feels… optimistic? I've heard horror stories from friends about months-long delays, especially with larger sums and needing Docusign for every single damn page. Is three weeks even remotely realistic for a transfer of this size?

I’m trying to plan out my asset allocation for the rest of the year, and this is a significant piece of the puzzle. I'm also starting to think about future RMDs from all these different retirement accounts. Has anyone used that RMD Calculator from Gold IRA Blueprint? Curious if it’s as helpful as it seems, especially for tracking multiple bullion accounts.

Any insights from those who have actually gone through this, particularly with Palladium, would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to manage expectations here and not get surprised by any bureaucratic black holes. Thanks in advance.

Totally feel this! I did a similar rollover for gold a few years back – not quite as much as you, but still a decent chunk. I was expecting it to be a quick couple of weeks, maybe a month at most. Nope, took darn near three months by the time everything was solidified and the physical metals were actually in the vault. The paperwork back and forth was mind-numbing. Hope yours goes smoother than mine did, especially with those PAMP Suisse bars!

Whoa, Palladium IRA, that's interesting! Not something you hear about every day. You mentioned PAMP Suisse bars – are those the only type of palladium you're looking at, or are you considering other forms/mintages as well?

Honestly, a "chunk" of $750k into *just* palladium bars? Seems a bit... concentrated, even for precious metals. Don't get me wrong, palladium has its place, but with the volatility it's seen, putting that much into one metal, especially if it's a significant portion of your retirement savings, feels like a really high-stakes play. Hope you've diversified elsewhere!

Hey, heard great things about PAMP Suisse bars, good choice for a Palladium IRA! Just a heads-up on the timeline, sometimes the custodian for your old 401k can drag their feet a bit. If you're feeling like things are moving too slow, don't be afraid to put some gentle pressure on them. A quick, polite follow-up call can sometimes work wonders. Also, make sure you've got all your paperwork squared away with the new IRA custodian – any missing info can definitely cause delays.

For tracking, a lot of folks recommend keeping a detailed log of every call, email, and document sent, including dates and who you spoke with. It can be a lifesaver if anything goes sideways. Good luck, hope those bars get in your account soon!

Yeah, I feel you on the timeline shock. I did a similar rollover from an old 401k into a Gold IRA earlier this year, not quite as much as your $750k but still a significant chunk, probably around $200k. I was told 2-3 weeks, and it ended up taking closer to 5! The paperwork shuffle was insane, and it felt like my old provider was intentionally dragging their feet. Hope your palladium bars arrive sooner rather than later!
