Numismatic vs. Bullion - What's your IRA play for silver?

    Key Takeaways
    • Been doing a deep dive into my Gold IRA lately, specifically on the silver side of things.
    • I'm a military retiree, living out here in San Diego, and keeping my portfolio solid is a huge priority for me and my family.

Been doing a deep dive into my Gold IRA lately, specifically on the silver side of things. I'm a military retiree, living out here in San Diego, and keeping my portfolio solid is a huge priority for me and my family. Currently sitting on about $350k spread across my retirement accounts, with a decent chunk in precious metals (mostly gold so far). Now I'm looking to diversify with more silver and I'm really grappling with the whole numismatic vs. bullion coin debate for my IRA.

My initial thought was just to go pure bullion for silver – American Silver Eagles, maybe some Canadian Maples. Low premium, easy to track market price. But then I started looking at some of the numismatic silver coins that are IRA-eligible, and the potential for appreciation beyond just the spot price is, well, enticing. I'm talking about things like certified proof coins, older pre-1933 silver dollars (if IRA-eligible, which is a whole other rabbit hole). The idea of having a collectible asset that also hedges against inflation is pretty sweet.

Here’s where I'm torn: While the potential upside of numismatics sounds good, I'm also wary of the higher premiums and the potential for illiquidity if I ever needed to sell quickly. With bullion, it feels more straightforward. But then, is that leaving money on the table in the long run? For those of you with significant silver holdings in your IRAs (especially if you're in that $250k-$500k range), what has been your strategy? Have any of you gone heavy into numismatic silver, and how has that worked out?

I'm really trying to balance solid security with growth here. Any firsthand experiences or advice on which route to take would be awesome. Especially interested if anyone here made a choice and then regretted it later, or if you found a good mix of both. Thanks in advance!

Hey, that's a good question. I'm actually curious about something you mentioned. When you say 'decent portion' of that $350k is in precious metals, are we talking mostly physical, or do you have some exposure to mining stocks/ETFs as well? Just trying to get a sense of your current allocation strategy.

This is a great question! I actually had a similar dilemma when I was setting up my Gold IRA a few years back. Ended up going mostly bullion after a lot of back and forth, mainly for the liquidity and the more straightforward pricing. My thinking was, I'm already taking a bit of a gamble on the price of silver itself, so I didn't want to add numismatic premiums into the mix.

That said, I did grab a small amount of some really cool historical coins just because I thought they were neat and could potentially appreciate differently. But for the bulk of it, bullion felt like the safer, more direct play for true investment. Good luck with your decision!

Interesting post! While I totally get the appeal of numismatics for some, especially with the potential for higher premiums in certain markets, I tend to lean more towards bullion for my IRA. The whole point of an IRA, for me, is stability and long-term value preservation, and sometimes those numismatic premiums can feel a bit... speculative for that purpose. Plus, just the thought of trying to liquidate a rare coin collection quickly if I ever needed to gives me a headache. Bullion feels a lot more straightforward for an IRA.
