Okay, so I've been doing a ton of research lately, probably more than I should admit for a Sunday afternoon. I'm a professor here in Richmond, and my 401(k) has been doing... well, exactly what the market's been doing. I've got around $380k in there right now, and honestly, the volatility is starting to give me heartburn. After digging into everything, I've decided it's time to diversify a significant portion into a Gold IRA, specifically looking at silver coins as a hedge.
I initiated the rollover process from my old workplace 401(k) to a self-directed Gold IRA last week. The custodian mentioned it could take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks for the funds to actually hit the new account and for me to select the metals. Two to four weeks feels like an eternity when I'm watching the news! It's not a direct transfer, but a rollover where they cut me a check, and I then deposit it within 60 days. I've got that check in hand now, just under six figures, and it's making me a bit nervous sitting there.
For those of you who've gone through this, is that timeline typical? Has anyone experienced a faster turnaround, or even worse, a much longer one? Any tips on what I can do to potentially speed things up on my end, or what questions I should be asking my new Gold IRA custodian to ensure this moves as smoothly as possible? I'm already past the initial paperwork, just waiting for the funds to clear so I can finally pull the trigger on those silver coins I've been eyeing.
Also, slightly off-topic but related: for those who've gone with silver coins, what's been your experience with premium over spot? I know it fluctuates, but I'm trying to set realistic expectations for my first significant purchase. Thanks in advance for any insights – this community has been incredibly helpful in my research!
