Just finished up the rollover process from a pretty substantial 401k into a Gold IRA, with a good chunk of it going into physical silver coins. Figured I'd share my experience and see if anyone else has gone through something similar, especially with the current market volatility we're seeing. Being retired from Wall Street for a decade now, I’ve seen enough cycles to know when to trust my gut, and for me, that gut feeling has been screaming "diversify into hard assets" for a while now.
The 401k had about $1.8M in it. Didn’t want to watch it erode away with all the inflationary talk and geopolitical shenanigans. I'm a heavy metals guy anyway, always have been since the 70s. So, the decision to go the Gold IRA route wasn’t a tough one. The actual process itself was… well, it was certainly a process. Found a reputable custodian based out of Delaware, which was important to me, given the legal and tax implications. They were helpful, but it still involved a lot of paperwork and phone calls. I went with a direct rollover, which felt safer than a 60-day indirect rollover for a sum this size, minimizing any potential tax headaches.
Specifically, I allocated about 30% of that rollover into various silver coins – Eagles, Maples, and some pre-1964 junk silver I’ve been eyeing up for a while. The rest is in gold bullion. The physical delivery to the depository here in Delaware was smooth, though the insurance aspect during transit definitely kept me on edge. So, for those of you contemplating it, do your due diligence on the custodian’s insurance policies! My old firm colleagues up in Midtown think I'm crazy for moving so much into metals right now, but I frankly don't trust the paper game as much as I used to. What are your thoughts on silver's prospects in the next 5-10 years? Especially considering its industrial demand alongside its monetary value.
