My wife finally came around on Gold IRAs... and I wish she'd done it sooner!

For years, I've been seeing the writing on the wall with the dollar and just general market volatility. Being in the dairy industry my whole life here in Wisconsin, you learn pretty quickly that not all your eggs should be in one basket, especially when factors outside your control can swing things wildly. So, I’ve been trying to get my wife, bless her heart, to consider diversifying into a Gold IRA for a solid three years now. My own portfolio is probably sitting somewhere between $700k-$800k, and I've had a decent chunk of physical metals for a while, but getting her to move some of her paper assets into something tangible felt like pulling teeth.
She's always been more conservative with investments, leaning heavily on the traditional stuff that our financial advisor pushed. "It's too complicated," she'd say, or "Gold doesn't pay dividends," or "What if you need to sell it quickly?" All valid points, I suppose, but I kept showing her the charts, talking about inflation, and even brought up the stability precious metals have shown during downturns compared to, well, milk prices some years! I even read her some articles from Kitco and Money Metals sometimes, trying to show her what real analysts were saying.
What finally tipped her? Honestly, I think it was the last inflation report combined with seeing the price of everything at the grocery store. We were talking about how much more expensive cheese curds are these days (the good stuff, mind you, not that squeaky imposter cheese), and she just looked at me and said, "Okay, show me how to do this Gold IRA thing." I nearly fell out of my chair! We ended up moving about $150,000 of her old 401k into a self-directed IRA with a focus on gold and some silver. The process was smoother than I expected, actually, once she was on board. We used American Hartford Gold as the custodian – they were pretty helpful walking us through the rollover.
It’s a huge relief, honestly. Having that peace of mind, knowing a portion of our retirement isn't just numbers on a screen, but something tangible, feels right. For those of you who've been trying to convince a skeptical spouse or family member, what finally got them to see the light? Or if you're the skeptical one, what made you change your mind?
