Thought I'd share a bit about my silver stacking. When I first started looking into a Gold IRA a few years back, I was pretty much all about the gold. Being a military retiree, financial security is paramount for me and the wife, and gold just felt like the more traditional, safer bet. I’d seen guys get burned chasing fads, so I initially treated silver almost as a side thought, or something for smaller purchases later on.
That changed pretty quickly once I started actually doing the research and seeing the industrial demand for silver. It's not just a precious metal; it's a critical component in so many emerging technologies. So, my strategy evolved. Instead of just putting a token amount into silver, I've steadily been building a much more significant portion of my precious metals holdings in it. Right now, probably about 20% of my ~400k metals portfolio is in silver, all held within my self-directed IRA. I still have a good chunk in gold, of course, but I'm feeling really good about the silver side of things.
I've been focusing on buying mostly 1 oz and 10 oz silver rounds and bars. The premiums can sting sometimes, living out here in San Diego, but I've found a couple of reputable dealers I stick with. My long-term plan is to keep accumulating, especially on dips – I try to treat those as opportunities, not scary moments. I'm not looking for short-term gains here; this is about preserving wealth and having tangible assets outside of traditional paper currency. It gives me a surprising amount of peace of mind knowing it's there.
Anyone else here initially overlook silver and then come around to it? What's your current allocation looking like, especially those of you with similar portfolio sizes? And for those who've been doing this longer, any particular types of silver that have performed better within your IRA?
