Thought I'd share a bit about my silver stacking. When I first started looking into a Gold IRA a few years back, I was pretty much all about the gold. Being a military retiree, financial security is paramount for me and the wife, and gold just felt like the more traditional, safer bet. I’d seen guys get burned chasing fads, so I initially treated silver almost as a side thought, or something for smaller purchases later on.

That changed pretty quickly once I started actually doing the research and seeing the industrial demand for silver. It's not just a precious metal; it's a critical component in so many emerging technologies. So, my strategy evolved. Instead of just putting a token amount into silver, I've steadily been building a much more significant portion of my precious metals holdings in it. Right now, probably about 20% of my ~400k metals portfolio is in silver, all held within my self-directed IRA. I still have a good chunk in gold, of course, but I'm feeling really good about the silver side of things.

I've been focusing on buying mostly 1 oz and 10 oz silver rounds and bars. The premiums can sting sometimes, living out here in San Diego, but I've found a couple of reputable dealers I stick with. My long-term plan is to keep accumulating, especially on dips – I try to treat those as opportunities, not scary moments. I'm not looking for short-term gains here; this is about preserving wealth and having tangible assets outside of traditional paper currency. It gives me a surprising amount of peace of mind knowing it's there.

Anyone else here initially overlook silver and then come around to it? What's your current allocation looking like, especially those of you with similar portfolio sizes? And for those who've been doing this longer, any particular types of silver that have performed better within your IRA?

Totally get this! My journey was pretty similar. Started with gold after hearing my dad talk about it for years, almost like a family tradition for "serious" investors. But then I started digging into the silver – the industrial demand, the lower price point – and it just clicked. Now my stack is a pretty even split and I feel way more diversified. Good on ya for sharing your experience!

Interesting read! Glad to hear the journey has been a positive one for you. Out of curiosity, what percentage of your overall portfolio would you say your silver holdings currently represent?

That's an interesting journey! While silver definitely has its place, especially with its industrial demand, I still lean heavily towards gold for a Gold IRA. The historical stability and universal recognition of gold, especially when you're talking about long-term retirement security, just feels more robust. Don't get me wrong, I diversify, but silver feels a bit more volatile for an IRA cornerstone, even with the potential upside.

Awesome to hear about your journey! It's cool how a lot of us start with gold and then open up to silver. For anyone looking to diversify their precious metals IRA, remember that not all custodians handle both gold and silver. It's smart to check their approved metals list and storage options before committing. Here's a quick search to get you started on what silver coins are typically IRA eligible.
