My Gold IRA Rollover Journey (and a little silver on the side!)

Been meaning to post about my experience rolling over a portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. As a small-town mayor here in Boise, I'm all about community and making sure our finances are solid, and that extends to my own planning for retirement. With all the talk of inflation and market volatility lately, I really wanted to diversify beyond just stocks and bonds. I'd been hearing more and more about precious metals, and after a lot of research, decided to pull the trigger.
I ended up moving about $70,000 from an old employer's 401k into a self-directed Gold IRA. The process was surprisingly smooth, honestly. I picked a custodian that had good reviews and a transparent fee structure. They pretty much guided me through every step. The actual transfer of funds took about three weeks, which felt a little slow at times, but I guess that's just how these things go. I chose mostly gold American Eagles for the IRA, but I did dip my toes into some silver Eagles as well – figured it couldn't hurt to have a little of both. It's not a huge portfolio by any means, but it feels like a really solid foundation.
The peace of mind I've gained is probably the biggest benefit. Knowing I have some tangible assets outside of the traditional financial system just feels... secure. Especially when you see the headlines every day. I'm not a "doomsayer" by any stretch, but I do believe in being prepared. I'm curious to hear from others who've done similar rollovers. Did you find the process as straightforward? Any regrets or things you'd do differently?
I'm also wondering, for those of you more experienced with silver, how do you see its role compared to gold in a retirement portfolio? I like the lower entry point for silver, but I know gold is often seen as the ultimate safe haven. Just looking for some real-world perspectives on diversifying within the precious metals space.
