Just wanted to share my recent experience rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately about inflation and geopolitical stuff, and honestly, after serving for 20 years, financial security is pretty much my number one priority. My pension is great, but I want to make sure the rest of my nest egg is rock solid, especially living out here in San Diego where everything is just... pricey.
I had about $300k sitting in an old employer 401k that was just feeling a little too exposed to the stock market's wild swings for my comfort. After doing a ton of research, I decided to go for a direct rollover into a Gold IRA. The whole process was surprisingly smooth. I picked a reputable company (did my due diligence on BBB and online reviews, called a few places), and they pretty much handled everything between my old 401k custodian and the new depository. Didn't have to touch the money myself, which was a huge relief for tax purposes. Took about three weeks from start to finish, which was quicker than I expected.
Now about 20% of that $300k is sitting comfortably in physical gold at a secure vault. I know some folks just go for the ETFs, but for me, having the actual physical asset provides an extra layer of peace of mind. It’s not about getting rich overnight; it's about protecting what I've worked so hard for. I feel a lot better knowing I have some tangible assets outside of traditional paper investments, especially with all the talk about potential de-dollarization and crazy government spending.
Anyone else in a similar boat, especially here in SoCal? What's been your experience with diversifying into precious metals? Any other strategies you're looking at to hedge against inflation or market volatility? Really curious to hear if others are seeing the same benefits or if there are things I should be considering long-term.
