Hey everyone, Betty here from Raleigh! I wanted to share a bit about my experience with my Gold IRA, as it's been a little over five years since I opened it. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting down with a financial advisor, feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options. My late husband, bless his heart, had always been so on top of our finances, and after he passed, I knew I needed to take a more active role in protecting the future he worked so hard for us to build.
I remember investing about $75,000 of our retirement savings into physical gold within the IRA back in late 2018. At the time, gold was hovering around $1,250 an ounce. My advisor really stressed diversification, and the idea of having something tangible, something that’s been valued for centuries, really appealed to me. Fast forward to today, and I just checked – gold is at roughly $2,050 an ounce! That's a pretty tidy increase, if I do say so myself. It’s given me a lot of peace of mind to see that portion of our legacy growing, especially with all the ups and downs in the stock market lately.
Of course, it hasn't been a rocket ship straight up. There have been periods where it dipped a bit, which honestly made me a little nervous at first. I think the lowest I saw it during this time was around $1,450 an ounce, if I'm remembering right. But I kept reminding myself that this was a long-term play, and I wasn't looking to get rich quick. My main goal was always wealth preservation and having a hedge against inflation. And honestly, it’s done that beautifully, a lot better than some of my other investments during these turbulent times.
So, considering my initial investment and the current value, I'm sitting on a pretty healthy gain. I haven't done the exact math on the percentage, but it feels good! I'm curious to hear from others who have had a Gold IRA for a similar amount of time. What have your experiences been like? Did you go for gold, silver, or a mix? Any big surprises or lessons learned along the way?
