My 5-year Gold IRA Journey: Worth the Hype?

Okay, so I’m coming up on my five-year mark since I really started dedicating a chunk of my portfolio to precious metals, specifically a Gold IRA. Before that, it was all tech stocks, real estate, the usual SF executive grind. After selling off a good chunk of my company shares a few years back, I was sitting on some serious capital gains and felt like I needed something tangible, something outside the traditional financial system. My portfolio hit somewhere in the mid-six figures at that point, and the idea of all of it being digital or in volatile markets just started to feel… heavy. That's when I pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA, putting a solid $150k into it initially, and I've been dollar-cost averaging a bit more in every quarter since then.
So, returns? Honestly, it's not going to blow anyone's socks off compared to a bull market tech run, but that wasn't the goal. My primary motivation was capital preservation and diversification. Seeing gold hold its value, and even appreciate steadily, during some of the economic jitters we've had over the last few years has been incredibly reassuring. When the market dips, I don't get that gut-punch feeling as much because I know a significant portion of my wealth is in something fundamentally different. It's not a 'get rich quick' scheme; it's more of a 'stay wealthy steadily' strategy, which is exactly what I was after, especially eyeing retirement down the line.
One thing that's been on my mind more recently, especially as I approach a decade or so from really winding down, is the RMD aspect. I know we're a ways off, but I've been dabbling with that RMD Calculator I saw linked somewhere a while back. It's actually pretty handy for getting a rough idea of what those distributions might look like from the gold. Anyone else here already dealing with actual RMDs from a precious metals IRA? Or thinking about drawing from it eventually? What are your strategies for liquidating or distributing without getting hit too hard?
Overall, I'm genuinely happy with the decision. It provides a level of peace of mind that a purely paper asset portfolio just couldn't. It's a hedge, an insurance policy, whatever you want to call it. It’s definitely not for everyone, especially if you’re looking for aggressive growth, but for someone in my position, looking to safeguard wealth amidst uncertainty, it’s been a solid play. Interested to hear if others have had similar experiences, good or bad, over a similar timeframe.
