My 5-year Gold IRA experience - what a ride!

Just hit the five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and honestly, it’s been one of the smartest plays I’ve made in my investment portfolio. For context, I’m an entrepreneur out of Scottsdale, and a significant portion of my 5M+ net worth is in precious metals. I started this IRA with around $500k back in 2018, primarily focusing on American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. I actually ended up rolling over some old 401k funds into it, which was a pretty smooth process, all things considered. Getting that physical allocation within a tax-advantaged account just made so much sense to me.
Returns-wise, it’s been pretty incredible. I haven't done a full audited calculation, but just by tracking the value of the underlying assets, I'm easily up over 60-70% on that initial half-mil. The volatility has been there, sure, but what asset class isn't? The key for me was having that long-term perspective and not panicking during the dips. If anything, those were opportunities to cost-average a bit more, which I did with another $100k or so I added in late 2020. I’m thinking about adding some PAMP Suisse Gold bars next year if the market plays out like I expect it to.
Beyond the impressive growth, the psychological comfort of holding physical gold, especially with all the economic uncertainty we've seen lately, is invaluable. Knowing a significant chunk of my retirement isn't just paper assets feels incredibly secure. It's a true hedge, and frankly, it's sleeping better at night money. Any old-timers here reach the ten-year mark yet? What was your experience like?
