Thought I'd share my 5-year journey with my Gold IRA, since I see a lot of questions about them here. I basically opened mine up back in late 2018/early 2019, right when I was starting to feel super uneasy about the market. Tech was booming, sure, but it just felt... unsustainable. Had about $750k in my portfolio at the time, and decided to roll over about $200k into a Gold IRA. My main goal wasn't massive gains, but really just hedging against a major downtown. Living in Austin, I see a lot of people go all-in on tech, and I wanted some diversity.
My strategy was pretty simple: 80% gold bullion (mostly American Gold Eagles), 20% silver (some junk silver, some Maples). I liked the idea of having some physical silver too, felt a bit more accessible if things really went sideways. For storage, I went with a reputable depository outside of Texas – wasn't comfortable keeping that much physical asset too close to home, honestly. The setup process itself was fairly smooth, just a bit more paperwork than a traditional brokerage account, as expected.
Looking back, it's been a solid ride. That initial $200k investment is now sitting somewhere around $300k, give or take depending on the daily spot price. That's a roughly 50% return over five years, which isn't going to make me a billionaire overnight, but it's consistent and gives me a huge sense of security. Especially during the early COVID market craziness, it was a massive relief to see that portion of my portfolio holding its value, even gaining, while other stocks were doing nose-dives. It really proved its worth as a hedge.
The only real "bump" was just the initial fees – they felt a bit steep compared to just buying an ETF, but knowing I had actual physical metal and secure storage made it worth it for me. Also, the buy/sell spread feels wider than I'm used to with stocks. For anyone who's been in a Gold IRA longer, what are your thoughts on typical management fees and spreads over time? Have you seen better returns on specific types of gold or silver in your IRA?
