My 401k to Gold IRA - What was your timeline?
- •Just closed out my old 401k from my BP days and rolled about $700k of it into a Gold IRA.

Just closed out my old 401k from my BP days and rolled about $700k of it into a Gold IRA. Been wanting to do this for a while, especially with all the noise surrounding the economy. The whole process took longer than I anticipated, about 6 weeks from requesting the distribution to actually seeing the gold delivered to the vault. I went with a mix of Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos, really wanted that physical security. My financial advisor back in Houston was a little skeptical at first, but once I explained my reasoning and how I see gold acting as a hedge, he came around. Still, six weeks felt like an eternity when you're talking about that kind of capital.
The initial paperwork felt pretty straightforward, but then it got bogged down waiting for the old 401k administrator to actually release the funds. Every time I called, it was a different excuse. "It's in processing," "We're waiting for final approval," you name it. That was probably the most frustrating part. Once the check finally arrived at the Gold IRA custodian, things sped up considerably. The actual purchase and allocation of the physical gold happened within a week, which was a relief. I got all the documentation confirming the serial numbers and storage location, which definitely eased my mind.
I'm curious what everyone else's experience has been like? I know each situation is unique, but six weeks felt a little drawn out for a direct rollover. Did any of you face similar delays with your previous 401k administrators? Or did yours go a lot smoother? Maybe it's just the sheer amount of money involved that made it a bit more of a bureaucratic nightmare.
Overall, I'm happy to have this chunk of my retirement safely tucked away in something tangible. With all the talk of inflation and market volatility, having a significant portion of my portfolio outside of traditional paper assets gives me a lot more peace of mind, especially as I’m enjoying retirement. Just wished the process itself was a bit more efficient. What are your thoughts?
