My 401k to Gold IRA transfer timeline experience (it was slower than I hoped)
- •Just went through the 401k to gold IRA transfer process, and man, it took a bit longer than I was mentally prepared for.
- •I kept seeing these ads that made it sound like you just snap your fingers and boom, gold in your account.
- •My reality was a little different, especially since I was doing a direct rollover from an old 401k.
Just went through the 401k to gold IRA transfer process, and man, it took a bit longer than I was mentally prepared for. I kept seeing these ads that made it sound like you just snap your fingers and boom, gold in your account. My reality was a little different, especially since I was doing a direct rollover from an old 401k.
I started the whole inquiry process with a few different gold IRA companies about two months ago. Once I picked one, the paperwork itself was pretty straightforward. Took me a couple of evenings after my shifts at the hospital here in Seattle to get everything signed and sent back. The biggest chunk of time was actually waiting for my old 401k provider to release the funds. That part felt like it stretched on forever. I was constantly checking my emails, feeling a little anxious about that 100k just sitting in limbo. After about three weeks, they finally processed it, and then the funds were sent to the gold IRA custodian.
Once the custodian had the funds, arranging the actual purchase of the silver coins was relatively quick. Maybe another week for the transactions to clear and for the coins to be allocated and shipped to the depository. All in all, from first contact to actually having my portion of silver coins secured in the vault, it was probably closer to 6-7 weeks. A lot of that was just administrative lag, which I guess is to be expected with financial institutions, but it still felt like a crawl.
Anyone else have a similar experience with the timeline for their rollover? Did I just hit a bad patch, or is this pretty standard for a direct 401k to gold IRA transfer? I'm happy now that it's done and I've got that retirement security, but I definitely learned to build in more buffer time for these kinds of things!
