Just wrapped up the rollover process from my old 401k into a Gold IRA and wanted to share my experience. It wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it might be, which was a huge relief. I've got a mid-to-high six-figure portfolio, probably around $700k-ish right now, and had a decent chunk of that sitting in a traditional 401k from when I was more hands-on with the logistics business before things really took off. Now that I'm prepping for succession and thinking about stepping back more in a few years, I really wanted to diversify beyond just paper assets.
The whole process took about three weeks from my initial inquiry to having the gold securely in the vault. The custodian I chose was incredibly helpful; they basically guided me through all the paperwork with the old 401k provider. Honestly, that was my biggest worry – dealing with corporate bureaucracy. But they handled most of the back-and-forth, which was a lifesaver with everything else going on trying to get the next generation ready to take over operations here in Memphis.
I decided to go mostly with gold coins, as I like the tangible aspect and the historical stability. While silver coins are cool, for this particular chunk of my retirement, I felt more comfortable with gold as the primary hedge. Definitely sleeping a little sounder knowing a good portion of my retirement isn't just subject to stock market swings. Anyone else here in TN gone through a similar rollover recently? Any surprises or things you wish you'd known?
On a related note, while looking into all this, I found a tool called "Retirement Planner" over at https://retire.goldirablueprint.com/?forum. It was actually pretty useful for visualizing how adding gold could impact my overall retirement picture long-term. Super intuitive for playing with different scenarios. Highly recommend checking it out if you're on the fence about moving some funds into precious metals for retirement.
