My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - Expectation vs. Reality on
- •$180k in a fairly standard 401k
- •10 business days
- •3 business days
Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rollover process, and man, the timeline was definitely something. I'd been sitting on about $180k in a fairly standard 401k for a while, mostly invested in tech and some S&P 500 funds. Being down here in El Paso, I see a lot of folks with good instincts about diversifying, especially with the dollar doing its dance internationally. I’ve always been a fan of tangible assets, maybe it’s growing up on the border, but there’s something reassuring about holding something real.
My biggest question going in was just how long it would actually take. All the websites talk about "seamless" and "quick" but give you these vague ranges. I started the process mid-February, feeling like global instability was ramping up a bit more than usual. I went with a company that seemed reputable and had good reviews for their customer service, which was a huge factor for me. The initial paperwork to get my old 401k administrator to release funds? That was the first hurdle. It actually took about 10 business days for that to even get processed and acknowledged. I was expecting maybe half that.
Once the funds were released, they had to be wired to the new Gold IRA custodian. This part was surprisingly smooth, only taking about 3 business days. Then came the selection of the actual metals – I ended up going with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. The actual purchase and delivery to the depository took another 7 business days. So, all in all, from my first phone call to seeing the confirmation that my gold was securely in the vault, we're talking about a little over a month, maybe 5-6 weeks total. Not terrible, but definitely longer than the "2-3 weeks" I had in my head.
Anyone else go through this recently? How did your timelines compare? I've been watching the markets pretty closely since, and I definitely feel calmer with a chunk of my portfolio in gold, especially after seeing how much more stable it feels than some of my old stock holdings. If you’re on the fence, check out the Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool – it was eye-opening for me to see the historical performance side-by-side, especially over the last 10 years. It really helps put things in perspective beyond just the daily headlines.
