Minimums for Gold IRA – what gives?

I’ve been looking into rolling a portion of my 401k into a Gold IRA, mostly for the diversification and inflation hedge. Been working as a secretary for an oil company here in Tulsa for years, and you pick up on a lot from the execs – they’re always talking about hedging against market volatility, and gold often comes up.
My current portfolio is sitting around the $180k mark, and I was thinking of moving maybe $30k-$40k into precious metals. But holy smokes, some of these Gold IRA companies have some pretty hefty minimum investment requirements. I’m seeing some as high as $50k! For some folks, that's chump change, but for me, that's a significant chunk of my retirement savings, especially for a first-time dip into physical gold.
It makes me wonder if these higher minimums are just a way to weed out smaller investors, or if there's a genuine operational cost reason behind it. Like, is it really that much more expensive for them to process a $25k transfer versus a $50k one? I'm not trying to be cheap, just practical with my hard-earned money. I’ve found a couple around the $25k mark, which fits my target allocation much better.
Have any of you run into this? What were your experiences with minimums for Gold IRAs? Did you find a good custodian with lower entry points that you'd recommend? I’m all ears for any advice or recommendations, especially from anyone who's navigated this before.
