Made some beginner gold IRA mistakes, wish I had known this stuff before

I feel like such a dummy looking back at my first dive into a Gold IRA a few years ago. You'd think being a jewelry store owner here in Providence, I'd have a leg up on understanding precious metals, right? And I do, extensively, when it comes to the actual metal. But the IRA part? That was a whole different animal. I started with about $60k in my portfolio, and honestly, I probably lost a few grand just on dumb mistakes and not knowing the ropes.
My biggest regret? Not understanding the storage fees properly. I thought a lower initial setup fee meant I was getting a deal. Nope. That annual storage fee snuck up on me, and it felt like I was hemorrhaging money compared to what I'd projected. Also, I was so focused on just getting some gold that I didn't properly vet the custodian. I ended up with one that had a really clunky online portal and their customer service was practically non-existent. Trying to get updates or even just clarify a statement was a nightmare. Ended up transferring, which was another headache and cost me more in fees.
Another thing I messed up was not diversifying within my precious metals IRA. I went all in on gold thinking it was the safest bet. Looking back, I really wish I'd put some of that $60k into platinum or silver from the get-go. With the way platinum has been moving lately, I feel like I missed out on some serious gains. I know platinum IRAs are a bit less common, but the principles are the same – don't just dump all your eggs in one metal basket.
So for anyone just starting out, or even thinking about a precious metals IRA: Do your homework on ALL the fees – setup, annual storage, transaction, everything. Don't just look at the metal price. And really, truly vet your custodian. Talk to their support, test out their platform if you can. And please, for the love of all that's shiny, consider diversifying beyond just gold from day one. Has anyone else made similar blunders? Or any brilliant moves they wish they'd made sooner?
