Gold IRA minimums - what are you seeing out there?
- •Most of my direct stuff is actually in silver – love the potential for a bigger upside there, though obviously more volatile.

Been seeing a lot of folks worried about minimums for Gold IRAs lately, especially with all the economic uncertainty driving more interest in physical assets. For me, that wasn't really a blocker – my first transfer into a Gold IRA was about $300k back in 2017, just Roth contributions that had pretty significant gains. Since then, I've rolled over a chunk of my SEP IRA, and my total allocation to physical precious metals is now well into the 7 figures, split between the IRA and direct holdings. Most of my direct stuff is actually in silver – love the potential for a bigger upside there, though obviously more volatile. Anyway, my point is, for anyone concerned about minimums, it really depends on the custodian and the amount you're looking to transfer.
From what I've gathered, some of the bigger players that specifically cater to Precious Metals IRAs (the ones I initially looked at, before going with who I did) had minimums in the $25k to $50k range for a direct rollover or transfer. For new contributions, it might be lower, but honestly, if you're not putting in at least that much, the fees (storage, admin, etc.) can really eat into your gains, especially on smaller amounts. That’s something I always tell my friends and business partners here in Scottsdale who are just getting started – make sure you're properly sizing your investment relative to the overhead.
I ended up with a custodian that offered a pretty low minimum for new contributions, but their rollover minimum was still substantial, which worked perfectly for my initial Roth transfer. They had a great selection of coins and bars, and their storage fees were competitive for the volume. I mostly hold 1oz American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, with a decent amount of silver Eagles and Kookaburras in my direct holdings. What kind of numbers are you all seeing from different providers out there for minimums these days? And are those minimums typically for direct purchases or rollovers?
