Just got my Gold IRA statement, question about storage fees

    Key Takeaways
    • This is my second year with a Gold IRA and I’ve got about $380k in it, mostly American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands.
    • My quarterly fee was $125.
    • That feels… not outrageous, but I'm trying to benchmark it.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Okay, so I just got my quarterly statement for my Gold IRA and while everything looks good – metals are there, values are tracking – I'm squinting at the storage fees. This is my second year with a Gold IRA and I’ve got about $380k in it, mostly American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands. I went with segregated storage, which I know costs more, but for me, coming from a family where asset protection and keeping things ours is pretty ingrained (my grandfather’s timber company was almost screwed over by a bank during the Depression, not going to let that happen to my gold), it felt like the only real option.

My quarterly fee was $125. That feels… not outrageous, but I'm trying to benchmark it. I know it depends on the total value, and my stuff is stored out in Delaware, which I picked partly because it felt geographically safe from potential West Coast shenanigans. My father uses a different custodian for his much larger precious metals holdings, but he’s also using a different kind of storage out of state, so it’s not really apples-to-apples. I’m thinking maybe I need to call my custodian and just confirm how they calculate it. Is it a flat rate up to a certain value, or a percentage? My original paperwork from a couple of years ago when I set this up wasn't super clear on the exact breakdown for segregated and I just kinda filed it away after signing.

Frankly, part of me wonders if I'm overthinking this. My accountant here in Spokane just gives me a shrug and says "it's the cost of doing business" when I bring it up. But with inflation running hot, every dollar counts, even if it feels small when you're talking about almost $400k in assets. It just feels like something I should have a better handle on, especially with this being a long-term play for me – thinking 20, 30+ years out, passing this down.

So, for those of you with Gold IRAs, especially if you’re using segregated storage, what are you typically paying in storage fees? And how is it calculated for you? Any tips on negotiating these, or is it pretty much a fixed cost based on your custodian’s schedule?

Been looking into this myself — the fees on some of these custodians are wild. Anyone found one that doesn't gouge you?

Oh man, I totally get this. I had a similar "wait, what?" moment with my first Gold IRA statement's storage fees. I've got a mix of Eagles and Maples, not quite at your level yet, but those fees definitely make you double-check the fine print. Hope you get some clarity on it!

Congrats on the healthy balance! That's a solid chunk of change. Out of curiosity, are those storage fees a flat rate or a percentage of your total holdings? I'm debating a Gold IRA myself and trying to get a feel for how those costs usually structure.

Hey, glad to hear the metals are tracking! But on the storage fees, have you actually looked into what other custodians charge for similar holdings? Sometimes it feels like we just accept those fees, but there can be a pretty wide range depending on whether it's allocated or unallocated storage, and the specific vaulted facility. Could be worth a quick comparison shop, especially with nearly $400k in there.

Hey there! Totally get the sticker shock on storage fees, especially as your portfolio grows. One thing to keep in mind is that some providers offer tiered fee structures where the percentage might drop slightly once you hit certain asset thresholds.

It's always a good idea to dig into the terms and see if that applies to your current setup. Also, you might find this article comparing different Gold IRA storage fees helpful for understanding the range out there and what's typical for various custodians. Good luck!

Interesting take. I've heard the opposite from a few people though — would love to see some actual numbers on this.

This mirrors what I've been seeing too. The macro environment right now is making a strong case for physical metals.

My advisor told me 10-15% in gold is the sweet spot but I went heavier. We'll see how it plays out.

Ngl I came here expecting the usual affiliate spam but the discussions are actually decent. Way better info than what I was getting from my old advisor.

I keep going back and forth between gold and silver allocations. The gold-to-silver ratio right now is making silver look attractive.

I was pretty skeptical about another gold IRA forum but the tools here on GIRAB actually surprised me — the calculator alone saved me hours of spreadsheet work.
