Okay, I gotta vent. And also, looking for some commiseration/advice from anyone else holding gold in their retirement. Been a military contractor my whole career, and you guys know how much we value security. Always been a "don't put all your eggs in one basket" type, so a few years back, after seeing some of the nonsense going on with the market, I decided to diversify a chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA. We're talking probably 150k-ish out of a 220k total portfolio now. Best decision I've made in a long time, honestly.
The inflation we're seeing right now is just wild. Every time I open my Fidelity app, I feel a pit in my stomach looking at my traditional 401k holdings. It feels like every dollar I've saved in stocks is just hemorrhaging purchasing power. Gas prices here in Jacksonville are still higher than they should be, groceries are insane, and it just feels like my money isn't going as far anymore. My gold, though? That's been sitting there, holding its value, almost acting like an anchor in this stormy economic sea. The peace of mind alone is worth it.
I was messing around with the Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool the other day, just out of curiosity, and it really highlighted what I'd been feeling. Over the last 10 years, gold has actually held its own pretty darn well compared to the S&P 500, especially when you factor in all this recent volatility. Itβs not about getting rich quick with gold, itβs about not getting poor quick with everything else, if that makes sense?
Anyone else feeling this way? Especially those of you who also made the move into precious metals? How have you structured your portfolio to deal with this rampant inflation? Are you thinking about adding more gold, or diversifying into other hard assets? Curious to hear others' strategies, especially if you're also in a similar security-minded investor camp.
