Home Storage vs. Depository for Gold IRA - What's your take?

Okay, so I've been wrestling with this for a while now for my Gold IRA. I've got a decent chunk, about $180k invested in physical gold through a SDIRA, and it's been a lifesaver through some of the wild economic swings we've seen running a tourism business here in Savannah. It helps me sleep at night when I see the news. But this whole home storage vs. depository thing is really bugging me.
I know, I know, the technical answer is that IRS rules usually mean a third-party depository for a Gold IRA. But I've been reading up on these "checkbook control" IRAs where you set up an LLC and then, theoretically, you could store the precious metals yourself. The idea of having direct, immediate access to my gold, right in my own safe, is incredibly appealing. Especially seeing how quickly things can change – think hurricanes here in GA, or just general economic uncertainty. The thought of my assets being locked away somewhere I can't physically get to them without a whole song and dance feels a bit… restrictive.
On the flip side, the security concerns for home storage are real. I've got a good safe, but it's not a Fort Knox. And then there's the whole issue of insurance, potential audits, and just making sure I'm not running afoul of any obscure IRS rules that could completely mess up my retirement nest egg. Is the peace of mind of having it right here worth the potential headaches and risks?
For those of you with Gold IRAs, especially if you're holding a significant amount like I am, what path did you choose? Did anyone go the home storage route, and if so, what was your experience? Any Savannah locals with specific insights on depositories or insurance options around here? I'm really trying to weigh the practical benefits of instant access against the undeniable security and regulatory compliance of a professional depository.
