Okay, so I'm just starting out with my Gold IRA, literally opened it a few months ago after finally pulling the trigger. I've got about $15k in there right now, and I'm planning to contribute regularly every month. I'm 28, based in Charleston, and trying to get ahead on retirement planning, so this feels like a smart move for long-term wealth preservation. I'm currently running a 70/30 gold-to-silver split, mostly because gold feels like the "safer" bet, but I keep hearing a lot about silver's potential for bigger gains.
My thinking was to anchor with gold, which seems more stable, and then use silver for a bit more upside potential. But now I'm second-guessing if I should flip that, or at least go 50/50. I know silver can be more volatile, which gives me a bit of pause, especially since this is my first real foray into physical assets for retirement. What are everyone's thoughts on optimal gold vs. silver percentages, especially for someone in my age bracket who's looking long-term?
I also wanted to throw out there, for anyone thinking about starting one, I used that Eligibility Checker tool to see if I even qualified for a Gold IRA. It was super helpful and cleared up a lot of my initial confusion. Highly recommend checking it out if you're on the fence!
Anyway, for those with more experience, how do you balance gold and silver in your precious metal portfolio? Any regrets going too heavy one way or the other? My current plan is to build this up to around $50k in the next few years, and I want to make sure I'm setting myself up right from the beginning.
