Gold IRA storage fees - what's a reasonable rate? Platinum IRA question too.
- •I’m diving into the Gold IRA world, probably with a Platinum IRA component as well given where platinum is trading right now.
- •Been doing a ton of research, and the whole storage fee situation is giving me a bit of pause.
- •I'm looking at putting a decent chunk – probably €250-350k – into physical metals within an IRA, moving some of my tech stock profits over.
I’m diving into the Gold IRA world, probably with a Platinum IRA component as well given where platinum is trading right now. Been doing a ton of research, and the whole storage fee situation is giving me a bit of pause. I'm looking at putting a decent chunk – probably €250-350k – into physical metals within an IRA, moving some of my tech stock profits over. Based in SF, so I'm looking at pretty secure options, naturally.
Most of the places I'm talking to are quoting annual storage fees as a percentage of the total metal value, usually somewhere between 0.5% and 1%. A few also have a flat annual fee option, which seems more attractive for higher values. For a quarter-million dollar portfolio, 0.5% is still $1250 a year just to keep it safe. Does that sound right to folks who've been doing this longer than me? I'm used to my Schwab portfolio just... existing with no explicit storage fee, so this is a new kind of expense to factor in.
Anyone got experience with this? Are there specific custodians or depositories that are known for better rates, especially for a higher value portfolio like mine? And how do these fees usually break out if you have a mix of metals – like gold and platinum? Is it typically one consolidated fee or separate charges for each metal type? Curious to hear what others with similar portfolio sizes are paying or what strategies you use to keep these costs down.
