Gold IRA storage fees - what's a reasonable rate? Platinum IRA question too.

    Key Takeaways
    • I’m diving into the Gold IRA world, probably with a Platinum IRA component as well given where platinum is trading right now.
    • Been doing a ton of research, and the whole storage fee situation is giving me a bit of pause.
    • I'm looking at putting a decent chunk – probably €250-350k – into physical metals within an IRA, moving some of my tech stock profits over.

I’m diving into the Gold IRA world, probably with a Platinum IRA component as well given where platinum is trading right now. Been doing a ton of research, and the whole storage fee situation is giving me a bit of pause. I'm looking at putting a decent chunk – probably €250-350k – into physical metals within an IRA, moving some of my tech stock profits over. Based in SF, so I'm looking at pretty secure options, naturally.

Most of the places I'm talking to are quoting annual storage fees as a percentage of the total metal value, usually somewhere between 0.5% and 1%. A few also have a flat annual fee option, which seems more attractive for higher values. For a quarter-million dollar portfolio, 0.5% is still $1250 a year just to keep it safe. Does that sound right to folks who've been doing this longer than me? I'm used to my Schwab portfolio just... existing with no explicit storage fee, so this is a new kind of expense to factor in.

Anyone got experience with this? Are there specific custodians or depositories that are known for better rates, especially for a higher value portfolio like mine? And how do these fees usually break out if you have a mix of metals – like gold and platinum? Is it typically one consolidated fee or separate charges for each metal type? Curious to hear what others with similar portfolio sizes are paying or what strategies you use to keep these costs down.

Right there with you on the storage fee hunt! Honestly, it felt a bit like a hidden cost when I first looked into it. I ended up calling a few places and found a pretty wide range. Definitely worth doing your homework on those.

Platinum IRA sounds interesting, especially with current prices. Good luck with the research!

Hey, just curious - when you say "where platinum is trading right now," are you thinking more about its current spot price compared to gold, or are you looking at the longer-term industrial demand outlook for platinum as a factor in your decision?

I hear you on the storage fees, they can definitely feel like a hidden cost. But honestly, "reasonable" is so subjective and depends entirely on your total metal value. For someone with a small starter portfolio, a flat annual fee might sting more than someone with a six-figure holding. It's less about the specific dollar amount and more about the percentage of your total investment it represents, IMO.
