I started really getting serious about my retirement planning about 15 years ago, right around the 2008 financial crisis. I’m a lawyer here in Philly, and while my primary focus is wealth preservation for my clients (and myself), that period really hammered home the need for diversification beyond just stocks and bonds. I wasn't looking to get rich quick, just protect what I had diligently built. That’s when I started steadily contributing to a Gold IRA. I’m talking about allocating about 10-15% of my portfolio to precious metals within the IRA structure. No crazy swings, just consistent purchases of physical gold.
Fast forward to today, and seeing the current economic climate, I'm genuinely relieved. My gold IRA, which probably sits around the upper end of that $500k-$1M range these days, has acted as a phenomenal hedge. While some of my other investments have definitely seen their ups and downs (more downs lately!), the gold portion has provided such a stable anchor. Honestly, it's allowed me to sleep a lot better at night, knowing I have that tangible asset. I recently even used the Gold IRA Calculator to get a rough estimate of its projected value down the line, and it was certainly a pleasant projection!
Now, I’m starting to look into other options – specifically platinum. I've always been a bit more conservative, but given gold's performance for me, I'm open to exploring. Has anyone here had similar success with a Platinum IRA? What are the pros and cons you've experienced? Any specific custodians or dealers you’d recommend for platinum, or things to watch out for that are different from gold? I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially from anyone who's been holding platinum for a decent stretch.
