Okay, so I'm just getting my feet wet with a Gold IRA, mostly focused on future planning for retirement. I've got about $75k in there now, definitely planning to add more over the next few years. Being the mayor of a small town here near Boise, I'm pretty community-focused, so I'm trying to make smart, solid choices that feel right for the long haul. My advisor has been great, but I'm looking for some real-world input from folks who've actually been through this.
I'm at the point of choosing between numismatic and bullion silver coins for the rest of my allocation, and honestly, it's making my head spin a bit. On one hand, bullion seems straightforward – you get the metal value, plain and simple. American Silver Eagles are obviously a popular choice. But then I hear about numismatic coins and their potential for appreciation beyond just the metal, which sounds appealing, but also feels a bit riskier. My advisor mentioned things like proof coins or older, rarer issues that could fetch a premium someday, but he also stressed the liquidity aspect of bullion.
I guess I'm trying to figure out the sweet spot. My inclination is always to be on the safer, more predictable side for retirement savings, but a small part of me is drawn to the "collector's premium" idea. For those of you with silver in your Gold IRAs, what did you end up going with? Did you stick purely with bullion for the ease of it, or did anyone dip their toes into numismatics? If so, what were the pros and cons you experienced?
My main concern is getting the best long-term value and ease of liquidation when retirement rolls around. I don't want any nasty surprises later. Any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
