Okay, so I'm just getting started on my retirement planning journey, and for some reason, I've got this bug in my ear about a Gold IRA. I’m a young professional here in Charleston, and I’m trying to be smart about diversification even with a relatively small portfolio right now – think sub-$50k total across everything. I’ve been reading bits and pieces about Gold IRAs and the whole physical metals thing just appeals to me as a hedge.
My main hang-up is the minimum investment requirements I keep seeing. Some places quote like, $25,000, others $50,000. That’s a pretty hefty chunk of change for someone like me who’s just trying to get a foot in the door with alternative assets. I was hoping to start with maybe $5,000-$10,000 to just dip my toes in, you know? Put a small percentage of my yearly contributions into it.
Is it even realistic to start a Gold IRA with less than, say, $25k? Are there specific companies that cater to smaller investors, or am I just looking at the wrong types of providers? I’m trying to figure out if I need to save up more before even bothering to look seriously into this, or if there are options out there that don't demand such a high entry point. Any advice from folks who started with a smaller amount would be super helpful!
Also, are the fees generally higher for smaller accounts, making it less cost-effective until you hit a certain threshold? I’m really trying to make every dollar count right now so I don't want to get eaten alive by fees if my initial investment is too small. Thanks in advance for any insights!
