I've been kicking around the idea of a gold IRA for a while now, mostly for some stability against the total madness in the markets lately. I've got a decent chunk of my personal investments in gold already, but that's all outside a retirement account, of course. For the IRA, the whole "depository vs. home storage" thing is really sticking in my craw.
My current personal gold holdings (we're talking a decent multi-seven-figure amount, mostly physical bars) are stored securely off-site, but it's not an IRA. For a retirement account, the IRS rules are, let's just say, "interpretive." My lawyer's given me the standard CYA advice about how complex home storage can be for an IRA, potential for disqualification, etc. But honestly, the thought of paying annual storage fees to some third-party depository for precious metals that theoretically I could just⦠keep in a very secure spot here in Greenwich, is a bit of a pill to swallow. I'm not exactly short on space or security measures, if you catch my drift.
So, I'm genuinely curious: has anyone here actually gone the home storage route for their Gold IRA? Not just personal gold, but specifically IRA gold? What kind of setup did you go with? Did you get audited? What were the headaches? I'm trying to weigh the cost savings and immediate access against the potential for IRS issues down the line. I'm looking at a pretty significant allocation here, probably mid-seven figures for the IRA portion, so it's not a small decision.
Part of me just wants to keep everything under my own roof, especially with the way things are going globally. Control is a big factor for me. But the legal gray areas are⦠unnerving. Any real-world experiences would be super helpful.
